Jan-Peter Hartung’s main research interest is in forms of religious expression in the Pashtun Borderland, i.e., the territories predominantly inhabited by Pashtuns and shaped by their languages and cultures. More specifically, he has been investigating processes of religious mobilization in this region between the eighteenth and twenty-first centuries, very much pivoting on the highly polysemic „Taliban” phenomenon. Currently, he explore the history of discourse formation in Islamic jurisprudence there, working back from the currently dominant manifestations of the „Taliban,” i.e., the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and the Tahriki Talibani Pakistan.

Mateusz M. Kłagisz is a senior researcher in linguistics at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland, and the head of the Section for Afghanistan Studies. He did his MA and PhD in Kraków and studied Pashto as well as Balochi under the supervision of Prof. Lutz Rzehak (Humboldt-Universität, Berlin).
His research interests include, inter alia, the sociolinguistic aspects of Afghanistan’s (pre)modern history, particularly narratives surrounding the 1919 independence, as well as visual propaganda from 1978 to 1992.
